EASTON, Mass. – The Felician University women's volleyball team twice went down to defeat during non-conference action on the second and final day of the Skyhawk Invitational, hosted by Stonehill College, on Sunday afternoon in Merkert Gymnasium.
After winning its first set of the day, Felician (0-3) could not duplicate the result. The Golden Falcons ended up on the short end of a 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23) score to Merrimack College before falling, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) to Georgian Court University.
Felician junior middle blocker Jazlyn Pipkins (Paris, Texas) was chosen for the all-tournament team by Stonehill athletics personnel. In three weekend matches, Pipkins hit .293 with 1.70 kills and 1.60 blocks per set.
Against Merrimack, the Golden Falcons scored the first six points of the match, including two service aces by freshman Sierra Gallagher (Honolulu, Hawaii). Felician still led by that same margin at 16-6, and took its largest lead at 19-12. The Warriors stormed all the way back to within 23-22, but committed an error out of a Felician timeout before a Melissa Marte (Bloomfield, N.J.) kill ended the set.
Merrimack jumped ahead, 16-5. in Set 2 en route to evening the match. During the pivotal third set, a Marte kill broke a 20-20 deadlock and put the Golden Falcons ahead. The Warriors, however, captured the final five rallies for a 2-1 edge.
A similar script followed in the fourth, as Felician tried to force a deciding set. A Pipkins kill gave the Golden Falcons a 23-21 lead before Merrimack closed out the match by scoring the final four points.
Marte led Felician with 12 kills and 14 digs. Pipkins totaled career highs of 10 kills and nine blocks, the latter one short of the Golden Falcon record held by Danielle Norman. Felician received eight kills and 13 digs from freshman Kahea Aea (Mililani, Hawaii). Merrimack senior Sofia Basauri (Beaverton, Ore.) hit .455 with 13 kills.
After the one hour, 53 minute, match, the Golden Falcons had to come right back and face Georgian Court, a fellow Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) member. Felician held leads of at least four points early in all three sets against the Lions, including 6-0 in Set 2 and 5-0 in Set 3, but could not capture a set.
Marte topped Felician with eight kills and sophomore middle Katie Asbery (Mililani, Hawaii) added six. Gallagher posted 21 assists and six digs. Georgian Court junior Shayna Rayside (Lakewood, N.J.) led all players with 12 kills.
Felician and Georgian Court will meet again in a CACC match on September 29 in Lakewood, N.J.
The Golden Falcons begin 2018 CACC play when they travel to Philadelphia for a 7 p.m. match against Holy Family University on Wednesday.
