LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University women's soccer team lost its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest, 1-0, to visiting Caldwell University before a Fan Fest crowd of 200-plus spectators on Wednesday evening at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Felician (1-3, 0-2 CACC) was playing its first home game of 2019.
The match marked the latest home opener in the 22-year history of the Felician program. The 2015 Golden Falcons hosted their first contest one calendar day earlier, defeating Goldey-Beacom College on Sept. 24.
On Wednesday, a 29th-minute goal by Caldwell freshman Sarah Costanza (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) stood up as the game-winner. A pass from the left side of the 18-yard area by Cougar senior Meghan Grundhauser (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) traveled across the box and found Costanza, who touched the ball inside the right goalpost.
Both teams were dangerous prior to Costanza's goal. Before 90 seconds had gone by, each side had put a shot on goal. During the 10th minute of action, a shot by Caldwell senior Katie Iannuzzi (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) hit the crossbar, and Costanza pushed the rebound wide. Just under 26 minutes in, Elisa Zuta's (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) well-placed corner kick was headed over the bar by Golden Falcon teammate Danielle Jenkin (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes).
The balance of period one was uneventful. Felician junior goalkeeper Jamie Kazenmayer (Mooresville, N.C./Lacey Township [N.J.]), however, kept her team within striking distance with five saves in the first 23 minutes of the second half.
But he hosts could generate only one shot for the final 45 minutes and were out-shot, 18-5, for the night. Caldwell sophomore keeper Jamie-Lee Bamford (Braintree, United Kingdom/Seevic College) needed two saves for the clean sheet. Kazenmayer finished the game with nine saves. Grundhauser topped all players with nine shot attempts, placing five on frame.
Jenkin recorded three of Felician's five shots.
The Golden Falcons are next in action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. CACC tilt at Georgian Court University in Lakewood.
