NEWARK, Del. – Wilmington (Del.) University scored in the 20th and 87th minutes to earn a 2-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's soccer victory over visiting Felician University on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex. The match kicked off the 2019 CACC schedule for both schools.
Three days after tying the school scoring record in a 9-0 win at Trinity Washington University, Felician (1-2, 0-1 CACC) was held to three shot attempts and one shot on goal by the Wildcats. Despite a generally positive work rate, the Golden Falcons were rarely dangerous in the offensive third.
Felician senior Jenna Fischetto (Wallington, N.J.) found the frame 1:52 into the match, but Wilmington sophomore goalkeeper Emily Camp (Pittsgrove, N.J.) made the save. The tenor of the game quickly changed soon after. The Wildcats got off five shots in the next 16 minutes, with Felician junior keeper Jamie Kazenmayer (Mooresville, N.C.) stopping two and another blocked by a defender.
The hosts' pressure paid off just before the 20-minute park, as Wilmington converted on a set piece. A free kick by Kassie Lambert (Sparrows Point, Md.) sailed right to left and found the head of Samantha Emmi (Logan Township, N.J.) in front of the far post. Emmi finished for her first score of the season.
Kazenmayer made a leaping one-handed save moments before halftime to preserve the 1-0 deficit at intermission. The second period began by mirroring the first. After an early chance for the visitors was thwarted, the Wildcats had the better of play for most of the half. With 3:36 left in regulation time, Wilmington freshman Rockesha Dayes (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) broke though with a score to secure the victory.
Wilmington (2-3, 1-0) ended the day with advantages of 14-3 in shots and 8-2 in corner kicks. Kazenmayer was credited with three saves. Emmi led all players with four shots and two shots on goal.
Felician plays its 2019 home opener on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Caldwell University in CACC action at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
