LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician University freshman left-hander Martarina Crumb (Branchville, N.J./Sussex Tech) pitched her first collegiate shutout as the Golden Falcons earned a five-inning, 8-0 Game 2 victory over the Jefferson Rams and a split of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. A late Golden Falcon comeback attempt fell short during Jefferson's 12-8 Game 1 win.
The split, combined with other league results on Saturday, left Felician (12-25, 8-10) in a tie for seventh place in the 14-team CACC. The top eight schools in the standings at season's end will qualify for the conference championship tournament, to be contested at the inaugural CACC Championship Festival. Felician has eight league games remaining.
Sophomore shortstop C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood) was a combined 5 for 8 with four runs batted in for Felician. Apacible ended Game 2 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning, forcing the NCAA eight-run rule. The safety was her 100th career base hit, making her the 22nd player in Felician history, and the fastest (79 games), to reach that milestone.
Golden Falcon senior center fielder Steph Donah (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) collected two hits in each game. Junior shortstop Breck Urban (Mullica Hill, N.J./Paul VI) did the same for Jefferson (14-18, 9-9).
In the nightcap, Felician scored single runs in each of the first three innings. Jackie Ribaudo (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) scampered home on a first-inning wild pitch before the Golden Falcons received RBI singles from Apacible in the second and Ribaudo in the third.
Meanwhile, Crumb (4-14) danced into and out of trouble. Ram baserunners were cut down at home plate in each of the first two innings, and Jefferson hit into double plays in the third and fourth. Felician broke the game open with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by Donah's two-run home run, and after Crumb retired Jefferson in the fifth, Apacible drove in Monica Laverty (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) in the bottom half to end the game.
Crumb yielded eight hits and three walks, but Jefferson left nine runners on base. Donah was 2 for 3 with a double, homer, three runs and two RBI, while Apacible and Mia Montoya (Las Vegas, Nev./John F. Kennedy [Calif.]) also had two hits each. The Rams' Emily Kuberski (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) was 2 for 2 plus a walk.
Felician chopped an early five-run Game 1 deficit to 5-3 after four frames. Jefferson took control by adding three runs in the fifth, receiving a two-run single from Katelyn Stys (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol) and an RBI hit by Erin Maher (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) after two were out. A four-run sixth by the Rams put them on the verge of ending the game early, but in the home half, Felician strung together five consecutive two-out hits.
A two-run single by Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif./West Valley) preceded a Donah two-run double and another two-bagger from Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee), making the score 12-8. Ram pitcher Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional) hung on and ended the inning with a strikeout, and reliever Naomi Stas (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) worked around a two-out error to clinch the win.
Pepper (10-4) allowed eight runs on 10 hits in her six innings. She struck out 10 Golden Falcons and walked four. Maher went 3 for 3 plus two walks from the leadoff spot in the lineup and Urban homered for the Rams. Apacible was 3 for 4 with a double. The game lasted two hours, 20 minutes.
Felician faces Goldey-Beacom College, which it leads in the standings by two games, in a CACC doubleheader on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in Wilmington, Del.
