MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore shortstop C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif.) drove in four runs and junior first baseman Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y.) knocked in three to lead Felician University to an 11-5 non-conference softball victory over Merrimack College on Sunday afternoon at the Ned Donkle Complex.
The game concluded both teams' stay at the three-day Snowbird Freeze-Out event.
Felician (2-3) amassed 13 base hits and drew eight walks in support of freshman pitcher Martarina Crumb (Branchville, N.J.). The left-hander fashioned a complete-game, allowing one earned run on eight hits, to earn her first collegiate victory. Crumb (1-1) struck out two Warriors and walked three.
The Golden Falcons, the designated visiting team, broke out for six runs on five hits in the top of the second inning. A two-run single by Apacible and Spiegelberg's two-run double highlighted the frame. Merrimack, however, moved back into contention by scoring four unearned markers in the home half of the second.
The 6-4 score held until the fifth, when another Apacible two-run single provided the Golden Falcons a cushion. The Warriors pulled to within 8-5 on a sixth-frame Crumb wild pitch, but Felician put the game away with three runs on one hit in the seventh.
Sophomore Elizabeth McCoy (Houston, Texas) was 2 for 2 plus a walk and classmate Luciellia Colarusso (Needham, Mass.) had a double among two hits for Merrimack (4-1).
Felician sophomore catcher Keelee Davis (Chula Vista, Calif.) accumulated two doubles and two walks. Freshman Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif.) and senior Steph Donah (Clark, N.J.) also joined Apacible and Spiegelberg with a pair of hits.
Felician is idle until its 10-game spring-break trip to Clermont, Fla. On Mar. 1, the Golden Falcons play non-league afternoon affairs against the University of Mary and Minnesota State University-Moorhead.
