LYNDHURST, N.J. – Freshman defender Anthony Nole (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) scored his first collegiate goal in the fourth minute of overtime to lift Felician University to a 4-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer victory over visiting Holy Family University at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex to cap Felician's Homecoming & Family Saturday.
Senior midfielder Kenny Monfort (Spring Valley, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional [N.J.]) scored twice and senior midfielder Maxi Ojeda (Yonkers, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) assisted on all four goals for the Golden Falcons (3-9-1, 3-6 CACC).
The victory kept Felician in contention for a berth in the CACC playoffs. The Golden Falcons are six points out of eighth place with three league games remaining.
Both sides got on the scoreboard in the match's first 11 minutes. Carlo Gonzalez's (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) score off Ojeda's corner kick 7:39 into the game was matched by a marker from Holy Family sophomore Davis Habilaj (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) in the 11th minute.
Monfort quickly put Felician back on top at the 15:17 mark. The Golden Falcons owned a 13-4 shot advantage for the first half and appeared to take control when Monfort again found the back of the net 8:04 before halftime.
But it took the Tigers (5-10, 5-5) fewer than three minutes to equalize. Sean McCormick (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) cut the visitors' deficit in half 98 seconds into period two, then assisted on a tying score by Matthew Flanagan (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) 79 seconds later. Holy Family reversed the first-half script and owned an 11-2 second-half shot advantage, but the Felician defense pushed the match into extra time.
Another Ojeda corner kick initiated the game-winning sequence. His offering found the head of Chris McLaughlin (Hollis, N.Y./Preparatory Academy for Writers) adjacent to the far post. McLaughlin headed the ball deep into the 18-yard box, where Nole made a short run and finished with a header off a bounce.
Felician senior goalkeeper Joe Sartori (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) earned the victory with five saves. McLaughlin led all players with five shots.
After six days off, the Golden Falcons head to Chestnut Hill College for a 3 p.m. kickoff on Oct. 20 in Lafayette Hill, Pa.
