Women's X-C Repeats Eighth Place Finish At CACCs
PHILADELPHIA – With an entirely new team from a year ago, Felician College repeated last year's team finish of eighth in the 2011 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Cross-Country Championship, hosted by Philadelphia University on Sunday morning at Belmont Plateau inside Fairmount Park.
Felician's 2011 squad is comprised of one transfer and six freshmen. Thirteen CACC schools sponsor women's cross-country.
"I'm really happy with the performance of our women's team today and this season," said 10th-year head coach John Brennan. "They're a very young team with a positive attitude, and they ran to their potential. We expect to get better and improve our results in this meet next season."
Junior Alyssa Collier (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) was Felician's frontrunner, as she has been all season. Collier's time of 22 minutes, six seconds, for 5,000 meters was good for 29th place out of 83 competitors. But freshman Sylvia Bialy (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) came within 14 seconds of Collier, the closest the two have been in 2011. Bialy placed 32nd in 22:20
Completing the Felician scoring were freshmen Lianne Rossi (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) (45th, 23:50), Desiree Alvarado (Los Angeles, CA/Eagle Rock) (61st, 25:15) and Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, CA/Aliso Niguel) (65th, 26:21). The Golden Falcons ended the day with 230 points, 202 more than champion Philadelphia University.
Also competing for Felician, and able to raise the scores of those finishing behind them, were freshmen Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, CA/Riverbank) (72nd, 28:25) and Taylor Parker (Surrey, B.C./Semiahmoo) (76th, 30:20).
By CACC rules, the first 15 finishers in the race were automatically named all-conference. It is believed to be the first time in the 12-year history of the program that Felician did not claim an all-conference runner.
Senior Sarah Simonetti of Philadelphia repeated as the CACC Runner of the Year after winning the race in 18:43. The Rams won their fourth straight CACC championship.
Felician will compete in the NCAA Division II East Regional championship on November 6 in Boston.
