LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician College's best season in 10 years came to an abrupt end on Tuesday afternoon, when the No. 2 seed Golden Falcons were knocked off by visiting No. 7 seed Dominican (N.Y.) College, 3-1, in the opening round of the 2011 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Soccer Tournament at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Felician finishes with an overall record of 11-6-1 for its first winning season since 2001. The 11 victories match the second-most in program history, and the Golden Falcons set a school record for conference wins with a 9-3 CACC record. Felician's second-place finish in the CACC regular-season standings is their best result since winning the league's regular-season crown in 2001.
On Tuesday, Felician fell victim to a hat trick by Dominican junior midfielder Jamilyn Snyder (Lacey, NJ/Lacey Township). After threatening often in the previous 15 minutes, the Chargers (8-6-2) got on the scoreboard in the 37th minute when Snyder delivered a 25-yard blast that fell just under the crossbar. The visitors took the 1-0 edge into halftime.
Dominican took full control when Snyder scored twice in a span of 1:45 early in the second half. Both tallies were assisted by sophomore Olivia Antonopoulos (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin). Late Felician pressure resulted in the first career goal for sophomore defender Katie McDermott (Monroe Twp., NJ/St. John Vianney) on a rebound with 1:49 left to play, but the Golden Falcons were denied a chance to draw closer shortly thereafter on a leaping save by Charger keeper Kaitlyn Hertz (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional).
Felician's late rally earned it a 15-12 shot advantage, but Hertz made eight saves for the victory. Junior Allie Couzo (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) stopped five shots for the Golden Falcons.
