RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician University never completely recovered from a slow start and suffered a 52-46 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball loss to visiting Bloomfield College on Tuesday evening at Job Gymnasium.
Despite the result, Felician qualified for the CACC playoffs when Post University lost to Caldwell University on Wednesday. Felician (9-16, 7-11 CACC) owns a one-game lead over Post for fourth place and the final postseason berth from the CACC North Division with one game to play, and has tiebreaker rights over the Eagles by virtue of defeating them twice.
The Golden Falcons, who reach the CACC Tournament for the first time since 2014, will compete in quarterfinal action on Tuesday, February 27 at 7 p.m. in Philadelphia against the University of the Sciences, the South Division champion.
Felician celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday. University president Dr. Anne M. Prisco was among those on hand to honor Golden Falcon seniors Treanda Foster (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy), Marta Moix (Madrid, Spain/John Carroll School [Md.]) and Shana Owen (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) in a pre-game ceremony.
However the Golden Falcons could not draw any momentum from the festivities. Felician, which never led, made only 1 of 16 field-goal attempts in the first quarter, and trailed, 14-6, at period's end. With four minutes, three seconds left in the second quarter, Bloomfield (16-11, 15-3) took its largest lead of the day, 26-13, but Felician tallied the final seven points of the half to trail by just six at intermission.
Period three followed a similar pattern. The Bears opened up a 10-point edge after a basket and foul shot by Bobbi Floyd (Las Vegas, Nev./Delaware State University) at the 7:04 mark. The Golden Falcons clawed back, and in the closing seconds, got to within 39-38, following two Kristin Smith (Hainesport, N.J./Rancocas Valley) free throws, but Bloomfield's Aanise Barnes (Newark, N.J./Glenville State University) converted ahead of the buzzer for a three-point lead.
Bloomfield opened some breathing room by netting the first six points of the fourth quarter to move ahead, 47-38. With 6:26 to play, Felician cut its deficit to 47-42 following a Kameron Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) layup. But the Golden Falcons only scored four more points for the duration of the game, allowing Bloomfield to inch away on the scoreboard.
Stone (nine rebounds) and Owen (five rebounds, four blocks) scored 12 points each for Felician. Moix had six points and five rebounds and Foster finished four points and 13 boards.
Senior Zhane Robinson (Newark, N.J./Union County College) posted 12 points, 12 rebounds and five steals and Floyd posted 11 points and 11 rebounds for Bloomfield, which amassed a 59-46 advantage on the boards.
Felician concludes the regular season by traveling to Lakewood, N.J., on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff with Georgian Court University.
