NYACK, N.Y. – Felician University senior swing player Shana Owen (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 22 of her career-high 27 points in the second half to lead the Golden Falcons to a 65-49 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory over host Nyack College on Tuesday evening at Bowman Gymnasium.
Felician (5-10, 3-5 CACC) overcame a 15-point second-quarter deficit to sweep its annual two-game season series from Nyack for the first time since 2013-14. The Golden Falcons outscored the Warriors, 40-18, over Tuesday's final 20 minutes.
Owen went 9 for 12 from the field and 8 of 10 at the foul line, as Felician outscored the hosts, 22-4, at the charity stripe. Owen added six rebounds and four steals while playing 32 minutes. Her previous scoring high scoring as a Golden Falcon was 12 in this year's season opener at Mercy College.
Owen, who tallied 14 of the Golden Falcons' 20 third-quarter points to help her team erase a 31-25 halftime disadvantage, produced the highest-scoring game by a Felician female in nearly three years. The last Felician woman to score more was current assistant coach Ashley Morris, who came up with 34 at Concordia (N.Y.) College on Feb. 24, 2015.
Nyack (2-16, 2-7) overcame a slow start on Tuesday by finishing the first quarter with a 10-1 over the final 3 ½ minutes for a 16-12 lead. After the teams traded three-point field goals to start period two, the Warriors embarked on a 12-1 run, with a three-pointer by junior Japria Karim-Duvall (Potomac, Md.) putting them ahead, 31-16, and 4:46 left until halftime.
The Golden Falcons, however, held Nyack scoreless for the balance of the half, netting the final nine points. Freshman Bionca Chambers (New Milford, N.J.) scored the final five of the half, with her pair of free throws at the 0:33 mark bringing Felician to within 31-25 at halftime.
The Golden Falcons extended their run to 19-0 spanning the intermission when Owen scored the first eight points of the third quarter, and a Kristin Smith (Hainesport, N.J.) jumper capped the spurt. The game was even, 39-39, on a jump shot by Nyack's Jocelin Wright (Ithaca, N.Y.) with 2:07 left in the third. But Owen again took over, coming up with the quarter's final six points to give Felician the lead for good.
The visitors took control by pouring in the first 10 points of period four, capped by a Sophia Guerrier (Waltham, Mass.) three, to lead, 55-39. Felician's largest spread was 21 points on two occasions, the latter at 64-43 following an Owen jumper with 2:52 to play.
Guerrier scored 10 points and added nine rebounds, and Smith accumulated eight points and five boards for Felician. Karim-Duvall came off the Warrior bench to amass 20 points, six rebounds and four steals in 28 minutes. The Golden Falcons out-shot Nyack, 50-31 percent from the floor in the second half.
Felician returns home to face the nationally-ranked University of the Sciences on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Rutherford.
