BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – The Felician University women's basketball team erased a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit before seeing its offense go cold late in its 80-67 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to host Bloomfield College on Sunday afternoon at the Bloomfield College Gymnasium.
Felician (3-7, 1-2 CACC) was playing for the first time since Dec. 13. For their second consecutive game, the Golden Falcons lost despite posting a season-high scoring total.
Felician had trouble dealing with Bloomfield's Zhane Robinson (Newark, N.J.). The senior guard poured in 41 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, shooting 13 for 26 from the floor, including 5 of 8 from three-point range, and sinking 10 of 12 free-throw attempts. In 38 minutes, she added two assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
Senior guard Danelle Gibson (Bronx, N.Y.) led Felician with 17 points. Golden Falcon freshman guard Bionca Chambers (New Milford, N.J.) totaled 14 points, nine rebounds and six steals, all season highs.
The Bears (3-8, 3-1) started and finished strong. Bloomfield opened up a 11-2 lead after 5 ½ minutes, and finished the game on a 16-3 run for the final margin.
Felician, which never led, fell behind, 21-9, after the first quarter, with Robinson totaling 16 Bear points. Bloomfield was ahead by that same spread, 33-21, with 3:33 to play in the first half, and led at halftime, 37-28.
Golden Falcon junior Kameron Stone (Bronx, N.Y.) sank two three-pointers early in the third quarter, helping her team pull to within 40-36. Felician trailed, 51-46, with 2:01 left in the period, only to see the Bears score the next nine points and exit the period ahead, 62-50.
Felician had one last run remaining in it, opening the fourth period on a 14-2 run and evening the score when Chambers split a pair of free throws with 4:41 to play. On Bloomfield's next possession, senior Jahniece Jaffe (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) buried a three to give her team the lead for good, and the visitors could manage only three points for the rest of the game. The Golden Falcons missed on their final 10 field-goal attempts.
Marta Moix (Madrid, Spain) contributed 13 points off the Felician bench. Stone finished with nine points, and Shana Owen (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored eight points with nine rebounds. Junior Deja McKenzie (Baltimore, Md.) amassed 12 points and six rebounds for Bloomfield.
Felician begins 2018 with three home games, including a 5:30 p.m. tip with Concordia (N.Y.) College on Wednesday.
