RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's basketball team was unable to take advantage of season-best scoring performances from junior Marya Trapp (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and redshirt freshman Kristin Smith (Hainesport, N.J./Rancocas Valley) in a 78-75 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to visiting Wilmington (Del.) University on Wednesday evening at Job Gymnasium.
Instead, Wilmington (6-9, 3-3 CACC) completed a comeback from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit when senior guard Jasmine Lee (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) drained a tie-breaking three-point field goal as the final buzzer sounded. The Wildcats held Felician to three points in the game's final six minutes.
Each team put four scorers in double figures. Trapp totaled 26 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and four blocked shots. Smith, meanwhile, turned in her first collegiate "double-double" with 17 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Macy Robinson (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) topped Wilmington with 17 points, including nine in the fourth quarter.
A buzzer-beating putback by Jameire Jefferies (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) gave the Wildcats a 21-10 lead after one period. The visitors were ahead by as many as 20 points with 2:58 left in the first half before settling for a 40-28 halftime edge.
Robinson began the third quarter with a three-pointer for a 15-point Wildcat edge, but Felician (3-11, 2-5) went on a 14-0 run over the next 3 ½ minutes to return to contention. Felician took the lead, 46-45, on a Safiyyah Lee (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) free throw with 5:03 left in the period, and extended to an eight-point edge following Kameron Stone's (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) putback at the 1:47 mark. Felician exited the quarter ahead, 58-52, having scored 30 points.
A Smith lay-up gave the Golden Falcons their largest edge of the night, 72-59, with 6:12 left in regulation. But the hosts turned the ball over on their next three possessions, and each time the Wildcats scored. A three by Robinson with 2:38 to play pulled Wilmington to within 72-70, and another at the 1:29 mark tied the score, 73-73.
Jasmine Lee drove to the basket to put Wilmington ahead with just under a minute to play, but Felician's Marta Moix (Madrid, Spain/John Carroll School [Md.]) did the same on the other end for a 75-75 tie. A block and rebound by Smith gave Felician a chance at a winning shot, but the Golden Falcons misfired on two attempts and were called for a shot clock violation at 0:01.4
Wilmington called its final timeout, allowing it to advance the ball. Jocelyn Rodriguez (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth's) in-bounded to Lee in the right corner for a well-contested shot, and the ball touched the bottom of the net as the horn sounded
Jasmine Lee and LaShyra Williams (Seaford, Del./Seaford) netted 15 points apiece and Jefferies added 14 for Wilmington. Safiyyah Lee finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for Felician, which received 10 points and six boards from Moix.
Felician outscored the Wildcats, 17-1, at the foul line. The Golden Falcons, however, committed 22 turnovers, which Wilmington converted into 25 points.
Felician concludes a stretch of seven out of eight games at home when it entertains Philadelphia University on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Rutherford.
