RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Caldwell University opened up a 41-19 halftime lead and went on to a 70-55 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory over host Felician University on Wednesday evening at Job Gymnasium. Caldwell (3-0, 1-0 CACC) is ranked No. 8 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region Media Poll.
The game marked the 2016-17 home opener for Felician (0-3, 0-1), and the season's CACC lid-lifter for both schools.
Caldwell junior guard Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) led all players on the night with 20 points and six steals. Junior forward Marya Trapp (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) recorded 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Golden Falcons.
The Cougars, who never trailed, got out to a 13-5 lead after six minutes of play, paced by eight points from junior Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, Mass./Sharon). Caldwell led, 22-13, after one period, before outscoring the hosts, 19-6 in the second quarter.
Caldwell's edge hovered between 16 and 20 points during period three, after which it emerged ahead, 55-37. The visitors' largest lead came at 65-48 on a Tina Lebron (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) three-point field goal with 3:14 to play before Felician ended the game on a 10-2 run for the final margin.
Rachel Simon (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) netted 13 points and Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass./St. Mary's) added 11 for the Cougars, who forced 30 Felician turnovers. The Golden Falcons received 10 points from sophomore Danelle Gibson (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), while classmate Kameron Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) totaled eight points and nine rebounds.
Felician was unable to take advantage of a 53-39 edge in rebounds.
