ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Felician University women's basketball team began its 2016-17 season on Friday evening with a 65-54 setback to Daemen College during the Roberts Wesleyan College East Coast Conference/Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Challenge on the RWC campus.

Junior Marta Moix (Madrid, Spain) topped Felician with 14 points and four steals. Daemen senior Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) led all players with 23 points and five assists. The Golden Falcons and Wildcats were meeting for the first time since the 1997-98 season.

Felician used consecutive Moix three-point field goals to open up an 18-10 lead with just over six minutes gone by in the contest. McDonell tallied the game's next six points to help Daemen cut the deficit to 20-18 by the end of the first period.

The Wildcats scored the first six points of the second quarter and never trailed again. Daemen led by as many as eight points with 3:40 left in the half, and, on the strength of a three-pointer by Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y.) at 0:23, carried a 37-30 edge into halftime.

Daemen started the third period with a 10-2 run over the first five minutes for its largest lead of the night, 49-32. The Golden Falcons held the Wildcats scoreless for the duration of the period, however, chopping the deficit to seven to start the fourth.

Felician extended the run to 13-0 and pulled within 49-45 when Safiyyah Lee (Voorhees, N.J.) netted the first three points of period four. Daemen, however, righted itself, when five points by Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y.) touched off a game-clinching 13-4 run.

Felician could not take advantage of its 59-49 rebounding edge, including 23-15 on the offensive glass. Junior Shana Owen (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished with nine points and 12 rebounds and Lee scored five points with 10 boards for the Golden Falcons. Felician received nine points and seven rebounds apiece from Marya Trapp (Red Bank, N.J.) and Kameron Stone (Bronx, N.Y.).

Felician plays again in the event on Saturday, when it takes on host Roberts Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
