RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team held host Felician University to six fourth-quarter points to pull away from the Golden Falcons and earn a 68-50 non-conference victory on Sunday afternoon at Job Gymnasium.
Saint Anselm (6-3) amassed a 63-37 rebounding advantage for the day. Hawk freshman Samnell Vonieh (Swampscott Mass./Whittier Tech) posted eight points, 17 rebounds and three blocked shots, and teammate Raquel Johnson (Inglewood, Calif./St. Anthony's) had eight points and 12 boards. Senior guard Eliana Scanlon (New York, N.Y./Oak Hill Academy [Va.]) led Felician (1-11) with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Saint Anselm, which never trailed, closed the first period with a 10-1 run to open up a 23-14 lead. Still down by nine with seven minutes, 22 seconds, left in the opening half, Felician tallied seven consecutive points to close to within 28-26 at the 4:01 mark. Johnson came up with a steal and lay-up in the closing seconds of the half to give the Hawks a 36-30 edge at intermission.
The Golden Falcons saw its deficit shrink to 36-35 on a Devin Fitzgibbons (Winslow, Maine/Winslow) three-point field goal with 8:51 remaining in the third quarter. But Felician came up empty on three possessions at that score, and the Hawks were able to extend their lead to 52-44 by the end of the third.
Saint Anselm then took full control by holding the hosts scoreless for the first 6:15 of the final period, building a 60-44 advantage. The final 18-point margin was the Hawks' largest of the afternoon.
Felician shot 27 percent from the floor, including 19 percent in the second half. Freshman center Remi Iwelu (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) totaled nine points and five rebounds for the Golden Falcons, and Fitzgibbons finished with eight points.
Ali Glennon (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) topped Saint Anselm with 14 points and Abela ended up with 13.
Felician is off until Dec. 31, when it travels to the College of Saint Rose for its last non-league tilt of the season.
