Women's Basketball Has Setback At Home To STAC

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – St. Thomas Aquinas College used a strong defensive effort and an early second-half run to earn a 75-45 non-conference women's basketball victory over host Felician College on Thursday evening at Job Gymnasium.

St. Thomas Aquinas (5-3) saw 13 players score in the game. Sophomore guard Kristen Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) came off the bench to lead the Spartans with 12 points, and STAC freshman guard Jenna Erickson (Melrose, N.Y./Tamarac) totaled 11 points and four assists. Senior forward Ashley Morris (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) paced Felician with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

STAC held the Golden Falcons (1-8) to 26-percent shooting from the floor, including a 23-percent second-half clip. The Spartans forced 22 Felician turnovers, and grabbed a 62-39 rebounding advantage.

Both teams started slow offensively, with STAC possessing an 11-8 lead after nine minutes of action. The Spartans moved ahead by as many as 12 points in the opening period, but Felician closed to within a five-point deficit before a buzzer-beating Sabrina Eggink (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) jumper sent the visitors into intermission ahead, 29-22.

STAC saw five different players score during a 15-0 run to begin the second period. The Golden Falcons were held scoreless for the first 6:22 of the half, and without a field goal for the opening 7:53. Felician came as close as a 13-point deficit with 9:58 to play on consecutive Mary Chisholm (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) lay-ups, but the Spartans scored the game's next 11 points to take control. STAC led by as many as 33 points on three occasions in the closing minutes.

The Spartans received six points, 16 rebounds, four assists and three steals from junior forward Alyson Brennan (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity). Chisholm finished with 14 points and seven rebounds and Eliana Scanlon (New York, N.Y./Oak Hill Academy [Va.]) netted 10 points for Felician.
