Slow Start Dooms Women's Basketball In Loss To Cougars

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Caldwell University built a 23-point first-half lead and went on to an 81-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory over host Felician College on Tuesday evening at Job Gymnasium.

Caldwell senior forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, R.I./Prout School) amassed a double-double by halftime, and finished the night with 18 points and 12 rebounds in 24 minutes. Cougar junior Lisa Rovatsos (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) posted 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Junior guard Eliana Scanlon (New York, N.Y./Oak Hill Academy [Va.]) stuffed the boxscore with 15 points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals for Felician (1-5, 0-2 CACC).

Caldwell, which never trailed, opened up a 12-2 lead after 4 ½ minutes of play. Ahead, 22-11, mid-way through the first period, the Cougars scored 10 consecutive points, including five by Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, N.Y./Ardsley), to move ahead by 21 at the 7:11 mark. The visitors were on top by 23 on two occasions late in the half before settling for a 40-21 halftime advantage.

Felician tallied the first five points of the second half, but never got closer than 14 points behind. The Cougars (3-2, 1-0) assumed their largest advantage, 68-43, on a Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass./St. Mary's) jumper with 7:38 to play in the contest.

The Golden Falcon offense never got completely on track, shooting 23 percent from the field in the first half and 32 percent for the game. Felician canned only 4 of 18 three-point attempts (22 percent).

Senior center Mary Chisholm (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) scored a season-high 13 points for Felician, while Ashley Morris (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) (10 rebounds) and Danelle Gibson (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) netted 11 apiece. Caldwell received 12 points and seven assists from senior guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic).
