RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician College women's basketball team was eliminated from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 71-50 quarterfinal loss to host Holy Family University at the Campus Center Gymnasium. Felician completed its 2013-14 campaign with a won-lost record of 12-15, improving by four victories over its mark from the previous season.
Felician fell to 0-28 all-time against Holy Family, including 0-17 at the Campus Center. The teams were meeting, however, for the first time in a CACC playoff game. The Tigers (18-9), the No. 2 seed from the CACC South Division and the two-time defending league champions, advance to take on Bloomfield College in the semifinal round on March 7 at the George R. Newman Center in Caldwell, N.J.
Both teams struggled to find the range in the early going on Saturday, as the game was scoreless for the first 2 ½ minutes. But while HFU eventually got untracked, the same could not be said of Felician, the CACC North Division's No. 3 seed. Golden Falcon head coach Steve Fagan spent three of his allotted six timeouts in the first seven-plus minutes of action, but with 10:32 remaining in the opening period, the Tigers led, 23-2.
Holy Family took its largest lead of the half at 29-4 with 7:31 to play, following consecutive three-point field goals by by Maggie Serratelli (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Erin Fenningham (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Basil Academy). At halftime, it was 37-14 in favor of the hosts, and Felician had shot 19 percent from the floor (6 for 32).
Any comeback hopes the Golden Falcons harbored were dashed when they were held scoreless for the first five minutes of period two. A Kasey Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) jumper made it 44-14 with 14:54 to play, and the Tigers led by as many as 35 points on two occasions, the last time at 63-28 at the 9:40 mark before Felician ended the contest with a 22-8 run.
Fenningham led all scorers with 17 points in 18 minutes. HFU freshman Jill Conroy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford) produced 12 points and six assists, and Woetzel had 11 points and three steals off the bench. The Tigers held Felician to 28-percent shooting for the day and forced 24 Golden Falcon turnovers, which they turned into 26 points.
Felician senior forward Trina Plummer (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) totaled 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Classmates Gisell Peguero (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) and Jac'Quel Saunders (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) scored 11 apiece, and junior Alex Salaycik (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) added nine.
Felician has not reached the CACC semifinals since 2000.
