Late Women's Basketball Lead Evaporates In Home Loss

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician College women's basketball team was outscored, 18-6, in the final 6 ½ minutes of its 67-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to the visiting University of the Sciences on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. Felician (8-11, 6-6 CACC) fell to 0-4 this season against CACC South Division opponents.

USciences junior guard Kaitlyn Schmid (Howell, N.J./Howell) was fouled from behind while driving to the basket with the game tied at 65-65 and 0:02.0 left in the second half. Schmid sank both of her free-throw attempts to provide the visitors with the winning margin. Felician could only muster a desperation half-court heave by Trina Plummer (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) which clanged harmlessly off the top of the backboard as the final buzzer sounded.

Plummer, who shot 7 for 11 from the floor, led all players in the game with 21 points and added 10 rebounds. Junior swing player Brianne Traub (Wayne, N.J./Eastern Christian) turned in 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Devils (13-6, 8-4).

Felician shot 58 percent from the field in the first half, but took only a 33-31 edge into the locker room. But the Golden Falcons got into the paint for three consecutive lay-ups in a 39-second span to assume their largest lead of the day, 59-49, with 6:58 to play in regulation.

The hosts then hit a cold spell offensively, and USciences tallied the game's next eight points. The Devils pulled even, 62-62, on a three-point field goal by Jessica Sylvester (Trevose, Pa./Nazareth Academy) at the 2:01 mark, and following two more empty Golden Falcon possessions, the visitors canned 3 of 4 at the foul line for a 65-62 edge at 0:26.

Felician knotted the game for the 12th time with 0:14 remaining when point guard Gisell Peguero (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) kicked to Alex Salaycik (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) for a straight-on three-pointer. The Devils called time out with 10 ticks left, and Schmid beat a defender off the dribble before drawing a foul and converting the game winning free throws.

Junior forward Ashley Morris (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) totaled 12 points and seven rebounds for Felician, while Peguero finished with 10 points, six rebounds and eight assists. The Golden Falcons' 23 turnovers negated advantages of 44-34 in rebounding and 47-29 percent in shooting.

Schmid went 8 for 8 at the foul line en route to a 13-point afternoon.
