BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The University of Bridgeport used an 11-0 run mid-way through the second half to overtake visiting Felician College and earn a 90-79 non-conference women's basketball victory over the Golden Falcons on Saturday afternoon at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium. The game marked the 2013-14 season opener for both spchools, and closed Day 1 of the UB Classic.
Felician overcame an early 10-0 deficit to lead, 44-41, at halftime. The Golden Falcons were ahead by as many as six points in the second half and moved back in front, 55-54, on a three-point field goal by Alex Salaycik (Staten Island, N.Y.) with 14 minutes, 49 seconds to play. But the visitors went scoreless for the next three-plus minutes of game action, allowing Bridgeport to build a 10-point advantage. Felician pulled to within 73-68 at the 7:49 mark but never got closer down the stretch.
Senior forward Trina Plummer (West Babylon, N.Y.) led the Golden Falcons with 19 points and seven rebounds. Classmate Que Lyles (Bronx, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 17 points with six rebounds, and Salaycik finished with 10 points.
Aziza Patterson (Teaneck, N.J.) led all scorers with 31 points, making 18 of 22 free-throw attemps in the process, for the Purple Knights. Bridgeport freshman Evelyn Ovner (Vallentuna, Sweden) posted 22 points and nine rebounds.
The contest contained 62 personal fouls and 85 free-throw attempts. Felician's comeback attempts were hampered by seeing four players foul out.
