WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Nationally-ranked Shaw University went on a late run and held off a charge from Felician College to earn a 74-66 non-conference women's basketball victory on Sunday afternoon at UDC Gymnasium. The match-up tipped off Day 2 of the D.C. Winter Classic, hosted by the University of the District of Columbia.
Shaw (7-1) is the No. 18 team in the most recent national Division II coaches poll.
With the game tied, 57-57, and five minutes, 22 seconds, to play in regulation, the Bears embarked on a 9-1 run, bringing the game clock down to 3:20. Felician then nearly flipped the script, turning in an 8-2 spurt to pull within 68-66 at th 1:06 mark.
But on the Bears' next possession, senior Sequoyah Griffin (Columbus, Ga.) drained a three-point field goal at 0:41. The Golden Falcons failed to match on the opposite end, and Shaw put the game away at the free throw line.
Felician junior Trina Plummer (West Bablyon, N.Y.) led all players on the day with 17 points, shooting 6 for 9 from the floor. Jac'Quel Saunders (Trenton, N.J.) finished with 12 points and Gisell Peguero (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 11 for the Golden Falcons. Griffin scored 15 points to top Shaw, which owned a 50-31 rebounding edge.
Felician (4-9) recovered from an early 12-3 deficit to take a 38-28 advantage before settling for a 39-34 halftime lead. The Golden Falcons went ahead by seven points early in the second period before Shaw rallied for a 47-46 edge at the 14:05 mark, setting the stage for the tight finish.
Felician concluded non-conference play for the season.
