OAKDALE, N.Y. – Dowling College pulled away early in the second half and earned a defensive-minded 51-38 non-conference women's basketball victory over visiting Felician College on Sunday afternoon at Dowling Gymnasium. The contest concluded the four-team, two-day Dowling Holiday Classic. The Golden Lions (3-1) received votes in the most recent national NCAA Division II coaches poll.
Felician (0-5) held the hosts to 36-percent shooting and caused 26 Golden Lion turnovers. The Dowling defense was even better, however, as the Golden Falcons shot 28 percent from the field and committed 29 miscues.
Felician received 10 points, five rebounds and six steals from junior forward Trina Plummer (West Babylon, N.Y.). Senior guard Shakeema Green (New York, N.Y.) came off the bench to add eight points, five rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes.
With the score tied, 13-13, and seven minutes, 19 seconds, remaining in the first half, Dowling went on a 12-0 run over the next seven minutes. Green then scored the final five points of the period and Felician entered halftime trailing, 25-18.
The Golden Falcons, however, began the second half with another offensive drought, not scoring for the first six minutes, 20 seconds. By then, the Golden Lions had built a 36-18 advantage. Felician closed to within an eight-point deficit on two occasions, the last time at 38-30 at the 8:38 mark, but never got closer.
Senior post player Danielle Wilson (Bay Shore, N.Y.) put up 22 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks for the hosts.
Felician plays its home and conference opener on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Concordia (N.Y.) College.
