RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Members of the Felician College women's basketball team, led by fifth-year head coach Steve Fagan, have joined the community of Rutherford, N.J., in taking part in the Rutherford Mayor's Wellness Campaign. The Golden Falcon players and coaches made an appearance at the Campaign's kickoff event, held Sept. 30 at Memorial Park.

The Borough of Rutherford is home to one of Felician's two Bergen County campuses. The Felician College Rutherford Campus houses, among other offices and amenities, the school's athletics department and dormitories.

The Mayor's Wellness Campaign will provide opportunities for the Rutherford community to live an active and healthy lifestyle. At the kickoff event, the Felician players signed a "Shape Up Rutherford" Fitness Pledge, promising to do such things as drink more water and reduce junk food consumption.

The Golden Falcons also participated in a Zumba class. Zumba is a Colombian dance fitness program.

"We appreciate the players coming to represent Felician College," said Rutherford Mayor Joseph DeSalvo. "This campaign is something the entire community can be involved in. That Sunday was just the kickoff of a year's worth of events designed to bring the community together for wellness."

Following the kickoff, the Felician players lingered to participate in the Rutherford Recreation Department's Annual Touch-A-Truck Event. The Golden Falcons handed out play hats and healthy snacks while Borough residents were allowed to touch, climb on, sit in, and experience many of the trucks they experience in their everyday lives. An ambulance, sanitation truck and fire truck were among the offerings.

"I think our most important purpose was to serve as role models for the kids," said team member Gisell Peguero, a junior from Brooklyn, N.Y. "It was the first time I did Zumba, and the first time I went inside a truck, and that was exciting. But seeing the reactions of young kids, and watching their excitement, was even more fun."

The Mayor's Wellness Campaign and the Touch-A-Truck Event were two of many service projects that the Felician women's basketball team has planned. The team will return to the local community on Oct. 27 to serve as chaperones for the Rutherford Ragamuffin Parade. The Golden Falcons will also sponsor a holiday food drive at their Dec. 8 home game against Wilmington (Del.) University.
