RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Felician College head coach Steve Fagan of Howell has been voted the 2011-12 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Basketball Coach of the Year by his coaching peers, according to balloting released today by the CACC.
Fagan, in his fourth year at Felician, earns a conference Coach-of-the-Year award for the first time in his career. He is also the first Felician women's basketball coach to win the honor in the Golden Falcons' 13 years in the CACC. Fagan is the second Felician CACC Coach of the Year this academic year, joining John Brennan of men's cross-country.
Fagan guided the Golden Falcons to the CACC North Division regular-season championship with a 14-5 conference record. It is the first time in program history that Felician has finished in first place in the league or division. Along the way, the team set school records for consecutive wins (10) and conference wins. The Golden Falcons are 17-9 overall heading into Saturday's 7 p.m. first-round home conference tournament game against the University of the Sciences.
"This award is about our team," Fagan said. "It's about a group of young ladies working together for a goal. The head coach is only as good as his players and his staff. The staff is the glue that keeps the program together. It's definitely a program award."
Felician graduated five seniors, including first-team all-conference selection Quay Baskerville, off of its 2010-11 squad that placed third in the CACC North. The Golden Falcons were chosen to finish third again this season, but instead captured the division by one game over pre-season favorite Caldwell College.
Fagan is a native of Staten Island, N.Y., and a 1993 graduate of Pace University. He has made previous collegiate head coaching stops at St. Francis (N.Y.) College, Globe Institute of Technology, and John Jay College.
