RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Sophomore guard Jac'Quel Saunders (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic) scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Felician College women's basketball team to its 10th consecutive victory, an 86-50 Central Atlantic Collegirate Conference triumph over visiting Nyack College on Senior Night at Job Gymnasium on Thursday evening.
With the victory, combined with other conference results, Felician (17-7, 14-3 CACC) clinched first place in the CACC North Division. It is the first league or division regular-season championship in program history. The Golden Falcons have two regular-season games left to play, then will host a first-round conference tournament contest on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
Felician led by as many as 14 points in the opening period before settling for a 29-21 halftime lead. Saunders then scored 23 second-half points as part of the Golden Falcons' 57-point explosion. Five points from Que Lyles (Bronx, NY/Banana Kelly) touched off a 14-0 Felician run to start the second period. Nyack cut its deficit to 47-35 before the hosts took control, outscoring Nyack, 39-15 over the final 10 1/2 minutes.
Saunders went 11 for 17 from the floor and 8 of 10 at the foul line in 29 minutes. Destiny Barnette (Paterson, NJ/PCTI) scored 13 points, and Lyles posted 12 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks. Felician received 12 points and three assists from sophomore Gisell Peguero (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood).
Brittany Mitchell (Queens Village, NY/John Bowne) (8 rebounds) and Khamari Tellis (Chicago, IL/Montclair) (7 rebounds, 2 blocks) scored 11 points each for the Warriors (1-21, 1-16).
The Golden Falcons held Nyack to 23-percent shooting from the floor and forced 34 Warrior turnovers. The teams combined for 53 personal fouls and 78 free-throw attempts.
Felician seniors Barnette and Jessica Ford (Jersey City, NJ/St. Anthony) (6 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks) were honored in pre-game Senior Night ceremonies.
