RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician College department of athletics, joining a national initiative by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), will sponsor "Play 4 Kay" Day during the Felician home basketball doubleheader on Sat., Feb. 11, at Job Gymnasium against the University of the Sciences.
Play 4 Kay, named for longtime North Carolina State University women's basketball coach Kay Yow, exists to raise awareness and funds for research of women's cancers. Its official charity is the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Yow twice successfully battled breast cancer before succumbing to the disease in 2009.
On Felician's Play 4 Kay Day, the Golden Falcon women's and men's basketball teams will wear pink T-shirts during pre-game warm-ups. The game staff will also be outfitted in pink, and coaches will be adorned in pink ribbons. Anyone attending the games is also encouraged to wear pink, the color of the official breast cancer ribbon.
The women's game starts at 1 p.m. on Feb. 11, with the men's game between the Golden Falcons and Devils to follow at approximately 3 p.m. Throughout the afternoon, athletics department representatives will be soliciting donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Raffles and giveaways are also planned.
New for this season, anyone who cannot attend the games, but wishes to help the Golden Falcons support the cause, can visit the team fundraising page to make an online donation. Go to http://tinyurl.com/73fgk69 to donate and to track the team's progress.
The Play 4 Kay (formerly Pink Zone) initiative is a global, unified effort to assist in raising awareness for women's cancers on the basketball court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. More than 1,300 schools and organizations are involved. More information is available at www.play4kay.org.
Felician has combined to raise more than $1,700 during similar events over the last four years.
