NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Felician College women's basketball team took over sole possession of first place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference North Division with a 46-41 league victory over host Wilmington (Del.) University on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Center. Felician (13-7, 10-3 CACC) has won six consecutive games and nine of its last 10.
Felician moved one-game ahead of Dominican (N.Y.) College and 1 ½ games clear of Caldwell College in the CACC North standings with six regular-season contests remaining. The Golden Falcons have never won a CACC league or division regular-season crown in their 16-year history.
On Saturday, Felician survived despite shooting 27 percent from the floor and 46 percent (12-26) at the foul line. Senior guard Destiny Barnette (Paterson, NJ) was the only player on either team to score in double figures, registering 17 points, five rebounds and four steals. Teammate Trina Plummer (West Babylon, NY) added nine points, seven rebounds and five steals.
The Golden Falcons outscored Wilmington, 6-2, over the final two minutes of the first half to take a 24-20 lead into the locker room. Felician never trailed in the second period, but could not pull away from the Wildcats, taking its largest lead at 41-35 on a Plummer three-point field goal with 5:49 remaining. Still ahead by five at the 1:42 mark, Felician failed to put the game away at the foul line, and victory was not secured until Jessica Ford (Jersey City, NJ) (5 points, 5 rebounds) blocked a lay-up at 0:16 with her team up three, and an ensuing Wildcat tying three-point attempt missed short in the closing seconds.
Freshman Cari Callaway (Newark, DE) led Wilmington (1-16, 0-12) with eight points and three steals. Felician forced 30 Wildcat turnovers and owned a 28-7 advantage in second-chance points.
