CALDWELL, N.J. -- Despite a game-high 29 points from senior guard Destiny Barnette (Paterson, NJ), the Felician College women's basketball team lost to host Caldwell College, 70-68, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action Monday evening at the Newman Center. Caldwell (10-5, 7-1), the first-place team in the CACC North Division, has won nine consecutive games.
The lead changed hands 13 times in the opening period, but a late three-point field goal by Caldwell junior Torey Jones (Providence, RI) allowed the hosts to go into halftime with a 34-28 lead. The Cougars never trailed in the second half, taking their largest lead 57-46, with 7:24 to play after five consecutive points by Kaitlyn Lambert (Cumberland, RI).
Still trailing by eight at the 3:38 mark, Felician (7-7. 4-3) received seven straight points from Barnette to pull within 62-61. Caldwell's Jessica Coscia then nailed a three-pointer, and Jones followed two Felician free throws with the game's next four points for a 69-63 Cougar edge at 0:31.
But Gisell Peguero (Brooklyn, NY) scored for Felician, and after Caldwell failed to put the game away at the foul line, Barnette nailed a three with four seconds to play for a 69-68 deficit. It took the Golden Falcons until one tick remained to foul Jones, and after she made 1 of 2, the visitors could not get off a final shot.
Barnette, the leading scorer in the CACC, reached 20+ points for the seventh time in her last eight games. Trina Plummer (West Babylon, NY) scored 14 points for Felician, and Que Lyles (Bronx, NY) contributed 12 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Lambert paced Caldwell with 19 points and 13 rebounds and Jones finished with 18 points and six assists.
Felician connected on just 3 of 18 attempts from three-point range. Caldwell won both meetings with the Golden Falcons this season by a combined total of six points.
