RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Senior guard Destiny Barnette (Paterson, NJ/PCTI) matched a career high with 26 points and added eight rebounds as the Felician College women's basketball team evened its record at 6-6 with a 76-66 non-conference victory over the visiting University of New Haven on Friday evening at Job Gymnasium.
Barnette got Felician off to a fast start, scoring 15 points in the contest's first nine minutes as the hosts opened up a 27-10 lead. New Haven (2-9) closed to within 36-33 late in the period, but a Barnette three-point field goal touched off a 7-1 run that allowed the Golden Falcons to take a 43-34 edge into halftime. Barnette had 20 points at the break.
Felician then assumed full control by scoring the first 10 points of the second half, taking their largest lead at 53-34 on a Gisell Peguero (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) jumper with 16:38 to play. The Chargers never cut their deficit under double-digits the rest of the way.
Both teams put four scorers in double figures. Trina Plummer (West Babylon, NY/North Babylon) posted 16 points and eight rebounds for Felician, while teammates Peguero (six assists) and Que Lyles (Bronx, NY/Banana Kelly) (five blocks) scored 12 apiece. Bria Moore (West Haven, CT/Career) topped UNH with 16 points and nine boards, and Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, MA/Holy Name) had 13 points and four steals.
The Golden Falcon defense, ranked among the top 10 nationally in Division II in field-goal percentage defense, held New Haven to 31-percent shooting from the floor and forced 29 Charger turnovers.
