Felician Digs Too Deep A Hole In Loss To Caldwell

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – After erasing an 18-point first-half deficit, the Felician College women's basketball team nearly came back from 20 behind in the second period before losing to visiting Caldwell College, 77-73, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action Tuesday evening at Job Gymnasium. Felician senior Destiny Barnette (Paterson, NJ/PCTI) established career highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds in the setback.

During Caldwell's game-opening 13-0 run, Cougar junior guard Torey Jones (North Providence, RI/LaSalle Academy) nailed a three-point field goal for her 1,000th career point. The visitors led, 23-6, 10 ½ minutes into the contest, and took their largest lead of the half, 29-11, with 7:46 remaining. But a three-point field goal by Shakeema Green (New York, NY/Murry Bergtraum) capped a 23-4 Felician run over the next six-plus minutes, and the teams went into intermission tied at 35-35.

The second half shaped up as a near-carbon copy of the first. The Cougars (3-5, 2-1) opened the half with a 26-6 run over the first eight minutes for a 20-point lead, only to see Felician (3-5, 2-1) again whittle away the deficit. Helped by 15 Caldwell missed free throws in the period, the Golden Falcons cut the deficit to 71-69 on a three-point play by Gisell Peguero (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) with 1:02 to go in regulation. But Caldwell went 6 for 8 at the charity stripe in the final minute to seal the victory.

Jones led four double-figure scorers for Caldwell with 19 points. Jeannette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) had 11 points and 14 rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Peguero finished with 14 points and Que Lyles (Bronx, NY/Banana Kelly) recorded eight points and a season high 15 rebounds for Felician.
