OAKDALE, N.Y. -- Felician College began play in the two-day Dowling College Holiday Tournament with a 58-52 non-conference women's basketball loss to the host Golden Lions on Saturday afternoon at Dowling Gymnasium.
Competing for the first time in 10 days, Felician (1-3) trailed early, 21-11, and played from behind for the rest of the afternoon in the defensive-minded affair. A 34-26 Dowling halftime lead climbed as high as 10 points before the Golden Falcons quickly sliced their deficit to 36-34 with 17 minutes, 20 seconds to play.
Felician never got even, however, as the Golden Lion lead hovered between two and eight for the remainder of the game. The edge stood at 51-48 with 2:30 to play when Dowling senior Kelly Puwalski (Queens, NY) canned her third three-point field goal of the game. After the teams traded buckets, the Golden Falcons were held scoreless on their next three possessions, not scoring again until 11 ticks remained.
Destiny Barnette (Paterson, NJ) led all scorers with 16 points and Trina Plummer (West Babylon, NY) (7-12 FG) added 15 for Felician. Connie Simmons (Syosset, NY) recorded 14 points and 16 rebounds and Puwalski finished with 11 points for Dowling (3-0).
Both teams struggled with their shooting touch, with Felician owning a slight 32.4 - 31.7 percent edge. But the visitors were outscored, 13-5, at the foul line and out-rebounded, 45-32. Dowling also blocked 11 Golden Falcon shots.
Felician concludes its stay at the tournament by facing LIU-C.W. Post on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dowling.
