RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Sophomore swing player Jac'Quel Saunders (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic Academy) scored a career-high 19 points as Felician College defeated visiting Queens (N.Y.) College, 80-40, in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Job Gymnasium. Felician (1-2), which was playing its home opener, picked up its first win of 2011-12.
Saunders registered 12 first-half points as the Golden Falcons opened up a 44-22 halftime lead. She was one of three Felician players to score in double digits. Sophomore Trina Plummer (West Babylon, NY/North Bablyon) produced 17 points, eight rebounds and six steals, and senior Destiny Barnette (Paterson, NJ/PCTI) added 14 points and four assists.
Felician, which never trailed, forced 33 Queens turnovers and held the Knights to 29-percent shooting from the floor. The Golden Falcons outscored Queens, 15-2, over the last six minutes of the first period for their 22-point bulge at intermission, then extended to a 60-28 edge with just under nine minutes remaining in the contest. The hosts were ahead by as many as 43 points in the closing minutes.
Senior Cadie Chu (Bellerose, NY/Bayside) topped Queens (0-3) with 12 points. Teammate Caitlin Hopkins (Holtsville, NJ/Sachem East) added nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Jessica Ford (Jersey City, NJ/St. Anthony) scored eight points with nine rebounds and two blocks for the Golden Falcons.
