LOWELL, Mass. – The Felician College women's basketball team erased a 14-point second-half deficit before falling to host University of Massachusetts Lowell, 71-65, on Saturday afternoon at Costello Athletic Center. The game marked the 2011-12 season opener for both schools, and was played on the first day of the Northeast-10 Conference/Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Challenge, hosted by UML.
Senior Destiny Barnette (Paterson, NJ) led Felician with 19 points and four assists. Barnette, who scored all of her points after halftime, canned 5 of 9 three-point field goal attempts.
UMass Lowell, which never trailed, extended a 28-18 halftime lead to 49-35 with 11 minutes, four seconds, to play in regulation. However, Two Giselle Peguero (Brooklyn, NY) free throws capped a 16-4 Felician run to bring the visitors within 53-51 at the 6:07 mark. Felician trailed by between two and six points for the next four minutes until a Trina Plummer (West Babylon, NY) lay-up tied things at 63-63 with 2:05 to play.
The River Hawks converted two free throws, made a defensive stop, and received a basket from Brianna Wilson (Lowell, MA) at 0:40. Plummer brought the Golden Falcons back within 67-65 with a bucket, but only 26 seconds remained and Felician was forced to foul. UML went 4 for 4 at the free throw line to seal the victory.
Sha'Nay Busher (Akron, OH) (13 rebounds) and Wilson scored 19 points apiece for the River Hawks. Plummer and Peguero, along with junior Que Lyles (Bronx, NY), all had 10 apiece for Felician. UML owned a 47-36 rebounding advantage and outscored the Golden Falcons, 27-10, at the foul line.
