Banca Walk-Off, Big Inning Lead To Sweep Of HFU
LYNDHURST, N.J. – A two-out walk-off single by Alyssa Banca (East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Regional) in the eighth inning led the Felician College softball team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Holy Family University in Game 1 of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Matera Field. Felician (6-28, 4-10 CACC) then used a six-run fourth to earn an 8-2 Game 2 win.
Banca went 3 for 5 with a triple and three runs batted in during her team's sweep.
In the opener, the teams went to extra innings after Golden Falcon junior right-hander Kristen Tenwolde (Ramona, CA/Ramona) (4-15) and Holy Family sophomore righty Victoria Reuscher (Cheltenham, PA/Little Flower) (8-7) pitched the game into a scoreless tie through seven. Tenwolde did not allow a Tiger runner to reach third base in regulation frames, while Felician's best chance to score came in the seventh, when Banca was cut down trying to come home from second base on a fielding error.
With two outs in the top of the eighth, HFU's AnnMarie Dalton (Northampton, PA/Northampton Area) was hit by a pitch, and scored on teammate Bianca Robinson's (Erian, NJ/Timber Creek) triple. But Felician put its first two hitters on base in the bottom of the frame. Following a lineout, the Tigers could not retire a runner on Grace Keller's (Hoboken, NJ/Holy Family Academy) fielder's choice grounder.
The Golden Falcons took advantage when Halei Van Dyke's (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) single to short center field tied the game. Reuscher induced a force at the plate for the second out, but Banca then ended the contest with a long fly ball off the outstretched glove of center fielder Robinson.
Tenwolde finished with a three-hitter, striking out six and walking none over eight innings. Reuscher totaled eight hits allowed with three strikeouts and four walks over 7 2/3. Banca, Van Dyke and Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, CA/Riverbank) each had two hits for Felician.
Felician erased an early 1-0 deficit in the nightcap with its big fourth inning. The Golden Falcons took advantage of three HFU errors in the frame, and received an RBI single from Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, CA/Del Oro) and a two-run single from Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, MD/Harford Tech). Banca's sacrifice fly capped the rally.
Sophomore pitcher Tori Bradburn (Ridge, MD/Great Mills) (1-6) earned her first victory of the season for the Golden Falcons. Bradburn gave up one run on six hits, struck out two and walked none in five innings of relief work. Ludwigsen. Clark, Ludwigsen and Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, CA/Aliso Niguel) each had two hits for Felician.
Danielle McDevitt (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) was 3 for 4 for the Tigers, who left eight runners on base. Rachael Alligood (Levittown, PA/Truman) (3-2) took the loss in the circle, yielding five runs (four earned) on five hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Felician faces a stretch of six consecutive conference road games in four days beginning on Wednesday at Nyack College.
