RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Leslie Korkgy-Valenti of Hasbrouck Heights, Herb Melendez of Levittown, N.Y., and Brad Forestieri of Elmwood Park have been named assistant softball coaches at Felician College, Golden Falcon head coach Lori Kwiatkowski announced today.
Korkgy-Valenti will serve as Felician's pitching coach. She has conducted clinics with several professional softball players and Olympic coaches, and is the owner and chief instructor of All*Starz Private Softball and Baseball training facility in Lodi. She also implemented the middle school and freshman programs at Hasbrouck Heights High School before coaching the Aviators varsity squad for three seasons.
After an all-county and all-state career at Leonia High, Korkgy-Valenti was an all-region pitcher for Muhlenberg College. A four-year starter for the Mules, she is still in the top 10 on several school career lists, including third in innings pitched (477 1/3) and fourth in shutouts (12). She was Muhlenberg's Sophomore and Senior Athlete of the Year, and was ranked 23rd nationally in earned-run average in NCAA Division III as a sophomore in 1993.
Melendez comes to Felician after two years as a volunteer assistant at Division-I St. John's University. He has coached various travel softball teams in Queens and Long Island since 1992, and is currently the head coach of the Long Island Sudden Impact U-16 squad. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Melendez was a semi-professional baseball pitcher in the Spanish Federation League.
Forestieri is new to the collegiate softball scene, but not to Felician, as he is entering his third season as an assistant men's basketball coach with the Golden Falcons. Scholastically, he played football and was all-state in basketball at Elmwood Park High. He played first base for an Elmwood Park squad that won a North Jersey Senior Babe Ruth title, leading the league in home runs and runs batted in. Foresteri went on to play for a pair of conference championship basketball teams at Bergen Community College.
Naoya Sato of Elmwood Park will return as the strength and conditioning coach on Kwiatkowski's 2012 staff.
Felician is an NCAA Division II member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The Golden Falcons are coming off a 14-30 campaign in 2011 in which they reached the CACC Tournament for the first time in four years.
