SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The University of the District of Columbia broke a 1-1 tie by scoring with 10 minutes, 53 seconds left in regulation to defeat Felician College, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at David See Field. The match wrapped up action for both teams in the season-opening Raider Classic, hosted by Shippensburg University, which began on Friday.
UDC junior Mario Benegas (Frederick, MD) finished off a feed from Adriel Garcia (Sao Paolo, Brazil) for the eventual game-winning goal. Felician (1-1) managed to get two shots off in the remaining time, but neither were on net.
The Firebirds (2-0) opened the scoring on a Roque Hernandez (Gaithersburg, MD) tally at 17:09. But the Golden Falcons got even when junior midfielder Josh Delva (South Orange, NJ) put in a scissor kick for his first career goal in the 30th minute. Junior Daniel Camargo (Vinhedo, Brazil) was credited with an assist on the play.
UDC enjoyed a 14-10 shot advantage, but neither team was able to put a large percentage of its chances on frame. Firebird sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Heatherington (Collingwood, Ontario) earned the victory with three saves. Freshman Rafal Krauze (Randolph, NJ) stopped two shots for the Golden Falcons, whose 10 shots were spread among seven players.
