Late Surge Lifts Men's Basketball Past NYIT, 69-60

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A three-point field goal by senior guard Jimmy Schmitt (Elmwood Park, NJ/Elmwood Park) in the closing minutes helped Felician College seal its 69-60 non-conference men's basketball victory over visiting New York Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Job Gymnasium. Felician junior Anthony D. Green (Jersey City, NJ/Snyder) came off the bench to lead all scorers with 16 points.

After trailing by as many as eight points on three occasions in the second half, the Golden Falcons (3-7) went ahead to stay, 52-51, on a John Tello (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) lay-up with four minutes, four seconds, to play in regulation. Felician pushed the lead to 56-51, but NYIT's Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, NY/Tilton Prep) knocked down a jumper for a three-point deficit.

Schmitt followed with a trey from the right side at the 1:52 mark -- his only points of the game – and the hosts' lead never dropped below five the rest of the way.  Green closed out the victory by making 6 of 6 foul shots in the final 30 seconds, and went 10 for 10 at the charity stripe for the day.

Tello finished with 15 points (all after halftime), five rebounds and five assists. Felician junior Antoine Obery (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds (eight offensive). Bear juniors Kayvon Roberts (Corona, NY/Holy Cross) (five rebounds, six assists) and Antoine Brown (Washington, DC/Prince George CC) (six rebounds, three steals) also scored 15 apiece.

Playing for the first time in three weeks, Felician shot 24 percent from the floor in the opening period as NYIT (3-7) took a 27-21 edge into the locker room. But the hosts asserted themselves on the boards in the second half. Felician's 49-31 rebounding advantage for the game included a 24-8 edge on the offensive glass, and led to a 24-8 differential in second-chance points.
