Felician Is Nipped In Overtime In Home Opener
RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Concordia (N.Y.) College scored the first six points of overtime and held on for a 79-75 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over host Felician College on Wednesday night at Job Gymasium. The game marked the 2011-12 home opener for Felician, and the first league game of the season for both schools.
Felician (0-5, 0-1) went 0 for 8 from the field in the overtime period, yet still had two chances to tie the game from the free-throw line in the final minute. But after shooting 22 for 26 at the charity stripe in regulation, the Golden Falcons made just 5 of 10 foul shots in the extra session. Concordia junior Argelix Gil (Brooklyn, NY/Franklin K. Lane) sealed the victory by grabbing a defensive rebound of an intentional free-throw miss with 3.6 seconds remaining and converting two fouls shots for the final margin.
Felician erased a 16-point second-half deficit to take a 70-68 lead on a three-point play in transition by junior Antoine Obery (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) with 33 seconds to play in regulation. Gil then forced overtime on a putback at 0:14. Obery's driving lay-up rimmed out at the buzzer.
Both teams put four scorers in double figures. Gil narrowly missed a triple-double with 25 points, 13 rebounds and nine steals, all game highs. He was supported by Norman Pope (Washington, DC/St. John's College) (16 points) and Brandon Whitaker (Harlem, NY/St. Agnes) (15 points, six rebounds, five assists).
Senior John Tello (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) led Felician with 18 points and eight rebounds. Tajric Boggs (Coram, NY/Longwood) recorded 16 points and six steals, and Obery finished with 13 points and three blocks. Each team committed 31 turnovers in the fast-paced affair. Concordia improves to 4-2 and 1-0.
