Sanchez, Simpson Named All-NJCBA
RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Two Felician College players have been voted onto the 2011 New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III all-state teams, which the NJCBA released last Thursday. Senior pitcher Joel Sanchez (Hialeah, FL/Monsignor Pace) made the First Team for the second consecutive year, and junior infielder Jimmy Simpson (Biscayne Park, FL/Coral Gables) was a Third Team selection as a utility player. All 17 head coaches of the non-Division I four-year baseball programs in the state were eligible to vote.
Sanchez, also a Second-Team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference honoree, went 6-3 with a school-record 1.33 earned-run average in 12 appearances (nine starts) for Felician. In 74 2/3 innings, the 5-foot-11 right-hander allowed 57 hits, struck out 61 batters and walked 23. He pitched a complete-game shutout against CACC regular-season champion Dominican (N.Y.) College on April 13.
Simpson enjoyed the best season of his three-year Felician career. He played in 43 games, starting 39, and led the Golden Falcons in hitting (.300) and on-base percentage (.393). He scored 21 runs, drove in 17, walked 16 times, and struck out 19 in 120 at-bats. Simpson started 21 games at second base, 16 at third base, and two in left field. He was also named to the All-CACC Second Team. The Golden Falcons play all of their games with wood bats.
Felician completed the 2011 season with a 24-22 won-lost record, its fourth consecutive non-losing season and its sixth straight of at least 20 victories. The Golden Falcons tied for sixth place in the CACC and missed the conference tournament on a tiebreaker.
The NJCBA is made-up of all baseball-playing senior colleges in New Jersey.
