RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The periodical Diverse Issues In Higher Education has selected eleven Felician College student-athletes as 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars. The award winners come from the sports of men’s soccer, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball.
Diverse Issues established the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Program, named for the late tennis star, in 1992 to honor outstanding undergraduate students of color. Each winner must be a non-freshman who competes in an intercollegiate sport, maintains a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20, and is active on his/her campus or in the community.
Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are chosen annually, and this year’s 11 winners are by the most in Felician history. Two honorees, juniors Lukas Fraczek (Szczytno, Poland/Winchendon School [MA]) and Peter Snihur (Ilawa, Poland/Winchendon School [MA]) of the men’s soccer team, are second-time selections.
Felician’s 2008 Ashe Sports Scholars are listed below. The on-campus coordinator is Dr. Alfredo Castro, associate professor of chemistry and faculty athletics representative to the NCAA.
A complete list national honorees is available at diverseeducation.com/Ashe2008/slideshow/ and in the May 29 issue of Diverse Issues.
