TORRES RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Three Felician College players have been voted onto the 2008 New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III all-state teams, which the NJCBA released today. Freshman relief pitcher Joe Brescia (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) made the First Team, while senior pitcher Scott VanEs (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) and sophomore catcher Marcos Torres (Miami, FL/South Miami) were Third Team selections. All 17 head coaches of the non-Division I four-year baseball programs in the state were eligible to vote.
Brescia, also a First-Team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference honoree, went 1-0 with a 1.46 earned-run average and a school-record seven saves in 16 appearances for Felician. In 24 2/3 innings, he allowed 16 hits (no homeruns), struck out 19 batters, and walked 10. The 6-foot-5 right-hander pitched to a .180 opponent batting average.
VanEs, the Golden Falcons’ all-time strikeout leader with 207, was an all-purpose hurler as a senior. Making seven starts and nine relief appearances, he went 3-3 with a 3.06 ERA, two complete games, and three saves. The 6-foot-1 righty struck out 60 and walked 26 in 61 2/3 innings, and opponents hit .246 off of him. VanEs was also all-NJCBA in 2006, when he made the Second Team.
Torres was Felician’s leading hitter at .365 despite starting 38 of the team’s 50 games at catcher. He tied for the CACC lead with 62 hits, amassing 13 doubles, three homeruns, 34 runs scored, and 39 runs batted in. He was a First-Team All-CACC selection.
Three Golden Falcon freshmen – Brescia, shortstop Hector Bello (Miami, FL/Miami Coral Park) (.333, 2 HR, 26 R, 29 RBI), and second-baseman Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) (.268, 1 HR, 31 R, 24 RBI, 28 SB) – were chosen for the 2008 NJCBA All-Rookie Team. The winners will be honored on Tue., May 27, at the NJCBA’s annual awards Banquet at The Pines Manor in Edison.
Felician posted the second-highest win total in program history in 2008 with a 26-24 overall record. The Golden Falcons tied for fourth place in the CACC and earned their third consecutive league playoff berth.
