Marcos Torres went 4 for 6, including a three-run homer, in the May 3 twinbill.
LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician College earned an 8-3 victory over visiting Wilmington (Del.) University in Game 1 of the teams’ Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Breslin Field. Wilmington (26-25, 17-9) rebounded to take Game 2, 3-1, setting up a do-or-die scenario for both teams when they meet in Sunday’s conference finale.

In the opener, Felician erased a 1-0 deficit with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning. A three-run homerun by Marcos Torres (Miami, FL/South Miami) capped the Golden Falcons’ five-run fourth.

Felician right-hander Albie Sanguiliano (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) (3-1) scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort. He struck out two and walked two. Torres was one of four Golden Falcons with two base hits; teammate Mike Libretta (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) was 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Cody Holliday (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) accounted for all of the Wildcat offense, blasting a solo homerun in the first inning and a two-run shot in the seventh.

Wilmington pitcher Clint Kuhl (Bear, DE/Middletown) entered with the tying runs on second and third in the nightcap to record the final two outs. The Golden Falcons (25-21, 16-10) had one hit through five innings off of starter Joe Matterer (Newark, DE/Newark), then rallied but fell short in each of the final two frames. Matterer struck out two and gave up five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Felician lefty Al Jardine (Neptune, NJ/Communications) (2-1) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Zack Wolfe (Middletown, DE/Middletown) singled and eventually scored on Joe Roth’s (Bear, DE/Glasgow) double. Mike Wilson (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) and Wolfe had RBI singles in the fifth. Torres went 2 for 3, and Dave Schoer (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) had an RBI single.

Prior to the twinbill, Felician retired No. 3 in honor of its all-time leading hitter, Mike Rooth (2003-06). Between games, Joey Algieri (New Milford, NJ/Paramus Catholic), Chris Flynn (Keyport, NJ/Keyport), Nick Riker (Highlands, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) and Scott VanEs (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) were honored in Senior Day ceremonies. The teams play Sunday in New Castle, Del., with the winner clinching a CACC playoff berth.
