PHILADELPHIA – Six Felician College errors helped lead to six unearned runs in the Golden Falcons’ 10-8 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball loss to host Philadelphia University on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

As the scheduled home team for the game, Felician batted last. Philadelphia (16-18, 14-6) jumped ahead with four runs in the top of the first inning, after loading the bases with none out on a single and two errors. One out later, Kyle Noonan (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) delivered a bases-clearing triple, and eventually scored on a hit by Jason Hartley (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy).

The Rams led, 7-2, after six innings, then tacked on a run in the seventh on a Dan Wothers (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) RBI single. The insurance proved important when Felician struck for five runs after two were out in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by two-run singles from Vinnie DiBenedetti (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) and Joey Algieri (New Milford, NJ/Paramus Catholic).

Philadelphia added on again in the ninth on JungMin Lee’s (Seoul, Korea/Sunrin) two-out, two-run double, and again the Rams needed every bit of their 10-7 edge. Felician (21-19, 13-8) received three walks and a hit batsman in the home half of the ninth before Zach Mentzer (Gettysburgh, PA/Delone Catholic) was summoned to relieve from his shortstop position. Mentzer retired Felician leading hitter Marcos Torres (Miami, FL/South Miami) (1 for 4, HBP) on a fly ball to right field for his first save of the season.

Lee, who scored three runs and drove in two, was one of four Rams with two base hits. Victor Quint (Pittsfield, ME/Maine Central Institute) worked around seven hits and five hit batsmen in 6 2/3 innings for the victory. DiBenedetti was 2 for 4 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBI and Algieri knocked in three runs for the Golden Falcons. Starting pitcher Nick Riker (Highlands, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) (4-5) gave up eight runs, but only two earned, in seven innings, and struck out seven. Felician had nine hits, seven walks and was hit eight times on the day, but stranded 13 baserunners.

The Golden Falcons and Rams are two of five teams, which were separated by 1 ˝ games in the CACC standings entering the day, in a tight race for the four conference tournament berths. The schools play a doubleheader on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Alumni to conclude the season series.
