 DiBENEDETTI LYNDHURST, N.J. – Junior Vinnie DiBenedetti (Forked River, NJ) and sophomore Marcos Torres (Miami, FL) had five hits apiece as Felician College split its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader with visiting Post University on Thursday afternoon at Breslin Field. Felician won Game 1, 8-1, while Post rebounded for a 7-3 Game 2 victory.
In the opener, a run-scoring triple by DiBenedetti in the bottom of the fourth inning broke a 1-1 tie and put Felician (21-18, 13-7) ahead for good. The Golden Falcons then put the game out of reach with five runs in the fifth. Chris Flynn (Keyport, NJ) drove in two runs with a bases-loaded, two-out single, and DiBenedetti followed with another triple, plating two more . DiBenedetti capped the rally by scoring on a wild pitch.
Right-hander Jeff Calabrese (Freehold, NJ) (3-1) worked five innings for the victory, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out three batters and walked two. Torres went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI and Hector Bello (Miami, FL) was 2 for 2 and scored twice. Eric Rovinetti (Watertown, CT) was 2 for 3 for Post, while Curtis Anthony (Torrington, CT) (2-1) struck out seven batters in a complete-game loss.
Post’s Corey Huffine (Colorado Springs, CO) broke a 3-3 tie with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning of the nightcap, and the Eagles tacked on three unearned runs in the seventh. Felician scored three times in the fourth to take a one-run lead, but Post tied the game on an RBI single by Joe Proscia (Brooklyn, NY) in the fifth
Eagle left-hander Brendan Wyman (Manchester, CT) (2-3) threw 125 pitches in going the distance, scattering 10 hits and striking out three. Chris Ouelette (Uncasville, CT) was 2 for 4 with two RBI and Rovinetti also drove in two runs to lead Post (16-22, 7-10). DiBenedetti went 3 for 3 and Torres and Mike Libretta (Staten Island, NY) had two hits apiece for the Golden Falcons, who put up 19 hits in the twinbill.
With seven conference games remaining, third-place Felician meets fifth-place Philadelphia University in a three-game series over the next two days. The CACC’s top four teams qualify for its conference tournament.
