 C. LANGAN STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Felician College head baseball coach Chris Langan earned his 100th career victory when the Golden Falcons defeated visiting Chestnut Hill College, 6-3, in Game 1 of the teams’ Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Felician also captured Game 2, 1-0.
Golden Falcon right-hander Scott VanEs (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) (2-2) earned a complete-game victory in the opener. He allowed seven hits, struck out five batters, and walked none. Felician received an RBI double from Dave Schoer (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) in the first inning and a two-run single by Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) in the second for a 3-0 lead. Chestnut Hill’s Bryan Henry (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) hit a two-run homerun in the top of the fifth inning, but Felician responded with three runs in the home half of the fifth to take control.
CHC freshman Tom Walton (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) (2-6) pitched five innings, giving up six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Zudonyi scored twice and was among three Golden Falcons with two base hits, while Henry and Dan Etherton (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) each went 2 for 3 for the Griffins (6-25, 4-14).
Felician junior Albie Sanguiliano (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) (2-1) pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings in the nightcap, and freshman Joe Brescia (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) retired the last two batters with the potential tying run on second base to complete the shutout. Brescia earned his seventh save of the season, establishing a CACC record for the league’s NCAA era (since 2003).
Sanguiliano yielded four hits, struck out eight and walked one. Felician (18-16, 10-6) scored its run in the third inning, when Vinnie DiBenedetti (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) led off with a bunt single and scored from first base on Zudonyi’s double down the left-field line. Zudonyi and Schoer each went 2 for 3. CHC right-hander Ryan Weber (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) went the distance on an eight-hitter.
Felician graduate student Chris Flynn (Keyport, NJ/Keyport) had a hit in each game to become the third active Golden Falcon to reach 100 career base hits. Langan, a Keyport High graduate and Hazlet resident, is 101-127 in five years, all at Felician.
