BRESCIA PHILADELPHIA – Junior right-fielder Mike Libretta (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) made a diving catch with the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base to end Felician College’s 3-2 Game 2 victory over the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and its sweep of the teams’ Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader Monday afternoon at Richie Ashburn Field. Felician was the scheduled home team and batted last in both games. The Golden Falcons triumphed in Game 1, 11-2.
Libretta’s catch allowed freshman Joe Brescia (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) to set a Felician record and tie a CACC Division-II era (2003-present) mark with his sixth save of the season. Brescia started the top of the seventh inning, and yielded a single to USP’s Dustin Gill (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic), who stole second and third bases. Two outs and a hit batsman later, Libretta tracked a fly ball toward the right-centerfield gap by lefty-swinging Pete LaRocco (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), diving back and to his right to preserve the one-run win.
Felician led, 3-1, after three innings, with a Marcos Torres (Miami, FL/South Miami) RBI single in the third proving to be the winning run. Junior Albie Sanguiliano (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) (1-1) picked up his first career victory, yielding three hits and no earned runs in four innings. Libretta had a double, scored twice and drove in a run. USP’s Michael Curry (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X) was 2 for 3 and right-hander Adam Kissinger (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/EHT) (1-3) went the distance on a three-hitter.
Felician (15-15, 8-5) scored eight runs on three base hits in the bottom of the second inning to break open Game 1, putting its first eight batters on base. The Golden Falcons drew six walks in the frame, including two with the bases loaded, and received a two-run single from Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel).
Jon Del Franco (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) was 2 for 2 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI. Zudonyi and Hector Bello (Miami, FL/Miami Coral Park) also had a pair of hits. John Rose (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) (2-0) allowed one run on two hits, struck out four and walked none in four innings of relief work. Pete McCauley (New Tripoli, PA) hit a pinch-hit RBI double for the Devils.
