BLOOMFIELD, N.J. -- The Bloomfield College softball team rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 5-4 Game 2 victory and a sweep of Monday afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with visiting Felician College at Pulaski Park. Bloomfield won the day's opening game, 4-2.
Monday's results moved Bloomfield one game ahead of Felician in the loss column for sixth place and the final playoff position in the CACC. The Deacons have 12 and the Golden Falcons nine league games remaining.
The Deacons (15-19, 6-6) ended the nightcap with three consecutive doubles. After an error, a fielder's choice grounder, and a hit batsman to start the home half of the seventh, pinch hitter Amanda Bartels (Saddle Brook, NJ) doubled home both runners. Bianka Cosme (Belleville, NJ) grounded a game-tying double down the left field line, and Mallorie Mathews (Fair Lawn, NJ) followed with a double to left to plate Cosme with the winning run.
Felician pitcher Sherry Flynn (Oakland, NJ) (4-4) had allowed one run on three hits prior to the fateful seventh. She also capped a three-run first-inning rally with a two-run double, as the Golden Falcons led, 4-0, after the second. Samantha Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY) was 2 for 3 with an RBI for Felician, and Nicole Cagnino had a pair of hits for the Deacons.
Felician (12-16, 7-8) also fell victim to the big inning in Game 1, as Bloomfield erased an early 1-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Vickie Berardi (Linden, NJ) had a solo homerun and Brianne Moore (Clifton, NJ) a two-run double in the frame. Felician brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh following a Lauren DeGrushe (Guttenberg, NJ) RBI single, but did not threaten further.
Amber Doran (Little Ferry, NJ) was 2 for 3 with a double for the Golden Falcons, and Berardi went 3 for 3 to pace Bloomfield. Fauna Ryerson (West Milford, NJ) pitched the last three innings in relief in each game, picking up the victory both times. On the day, she allowed one run on three hits in six innings.
