LAKEWOOD, N.J. -- Nationally-ranked Georgian Court University defeated visiting Felician College, 3-0, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at GCU Field. Game 2 of the teams' scheduled doubleheader was halted by rain before becoming official.
In the completed game, Felician (12-14, 7-6) fell victim to the third shutout in four starts for Georgian Court junior pitcher Samantha Sasko (Groveville, NJ). GCU took an early lead when Heather Walker (Hanover, Ontario) hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the first inning. Teammate Mallory Kirchner (South Amboy, NJ) followed with a single and would score later in the inning on a wild pitch.
Sasko (17-4) allowed four hits, struck out nine batters, and walked three. The Golden Falcons' best scoring chances came in first and fourth innings, when they placed runners on first and second with one out. But Sasko retired the next two hitters each time, and Kirchner added a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Felician's Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY) (4-6) gave up three earned runs on six hits in a complete-game effort.
Felician led, 3-2, in the nightcap when the rains came during the fourth inning. The Lions (24-8, 11-0) are ranked No. 25 in the latest national Division II coaches poll.
