DeSOCIO LODI, N.J. – Senior Dara DeSocio (Cliffside Park, NJ/Paramus Catholic) pitched a four-hit shutout and stroked a two-run double to lead Felician College to a 3-0 Game 2 victory and a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader with visiting Philadelphia University on Thursday afternoon at Kennedy Park. Felician scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win Game 1, 2-1.
In the nightcap, the Golden Falcons (12-13, 7-5) jumped on top in the first inning on a two-out run-scoring single from Jenna Krowl (Kearny, NJ/Kearny). Samantha Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) doubled to start the home half of the second, and, following an error and a stolen base, DeSocio drove a ball to deep center that left the field on one hop.
DeSocio (4-5) struck out three batters and walked one, throwing 90 pitches. She escaped a two-on, none-out jam in the sixth to preserve her second shutout of the season. Maureen Keenan (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) and Jen Richard (Millstone Twp., NJ/Allentown) had two hits apiece for Philadelphia (7-17, 3-7).
Felician came up with four singles in the seventh to leave the Rams on the field in the opener. Pinch-hitter Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) led off with an infield hit off of Philadelphia starter Jacque Curtis (Punxsutawney, PA/Punxsutawney) (4-7). Broecker was sacrificed to second, and advanced to third on Katie Spera’s (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) hard single to right.
Ram Game 2 starter Randi Wozniak (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) relieved Curtis, but surrendered Heather Van Dyke’s (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) RBI single on an 0-and-2 pitch. Lauren DeGrushe (Guttenberg, NJ/High Tech) followed with her second walk-off hit of the week, scoring Spera from second base.
Golden Falcon right-hander Sherry Flynn (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) (4-3) gave up an RBI double to Curtis in the first inning, but went the distance on a six-hitter. She struck out seven and walked two. Richard and Janine Becker (Galloway, NJ/Abesegami) had two hits apiece for the Rams, as did Spera for Felician.
