SCHOER LYNDHURST, N.J. – Junior Dave Schoer (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) hit a two-out walk-off single to give the Felician College baseball team a 2-1, eight-inning victory over visiting Dominican (N.Y.) College in Game 1 of the teams’ Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Breslin Field. Dominican, ranked eighth in the most recent Division II Northeast regional writers poll, recovered for a 3-0 victory in Game 2.
In the opener, Felician right-handers Scott VanEs (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) and Joe Brescia (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) combined on a two-hitter, with Brescia recording the final five outs for his first career victory. Junior Mike Libretta (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) collected a one-out double in the home half of the eighth, and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Following a groundout, a walk, and a pitching change, Schoer singled up the middle for his second game-winning RBI in as many games.
Dominican (12-16, 4-4) had opened the scoring on a homerun by Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) leading off the second inning. Charger starter Brian Craig (Shenendoah, PA) carried a no-hitter into the fifth, but the Golden Falcons chased him with two hits and a walk in that inning, tying the score on a Libretta sacrifice fly. VanEs yielded two hits, struck out four batters and walked four in 6 1/3 innings in a no decision.
Dominican freshman right-hander D.J. Stinsman (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/EHT) pitched a four-hit shutout in the nightcap with five strikeouts and one walk. He did not allow an extra-base hit, and only once did a Golden Falcon runner reach third base. The Chargers took the lead in the fourth inning on an errant pick-off throw, and received run-scoring hits from Jon Ryan (Troy, NY/Lansingborough) in the fifth and Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony’s) in the seventh. Jeff Calabrese (Freehold, NJ/CBA) (2-1) allowed one earned run in a complete-game three-hitter for Felician (10-13, 3-3).
